Banana Cellar
Facade, Protection
Bicycle shelter and refuse storage site, Berlin, Germany
Architects: k1 Landschaftsarchitekten Kuhn Klapka GmbH
The Federal Real Estate Agency played an important role during the critical period when West Berlin was isolated from the outside world. At that time, essential supplies, ranging from coal to food, were airlifted into the city. Intriguingly, this federal institution even had a part of its basement dedicated to storing bananas, affectionately referred to as the "Banana Cellar". To honour this unique piece of history, the structure now gracing the institution's outdoor area proudly features a colossal golden banana. Behind the perforated facade, the building is used as a bicycle shelter and refuse storage site. The design of the huge banana has been created using RMIG Imageperf. The facade incorporates a total of 77 individual sheets, coming together to form the eye-catching result.
